Interest & participation in AFL across the Gold Coast continues to grow rapidly with the excitement of the Gold Coast Football Club’s AFL team and the hard work of the AFL Queensland development staff on the Gold Coast.
One noticeable group of school participants enjoying the game of AFL are the APS (All Private Schools) school students. Close to 300 boys and girls from all 8 APS schools took part in a 10 week school competition at Carrara.
For the first time ever – every school was represented in this competition including Somerset College who took part for the first time after an overwhelming interest in the AFL Auskick program held at the start of the year.
Gold Coast Football Club who support not only this competition, but all of the school competitions on the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers region – had players Joseph Daye and Zac Smith on hand, to share some insights of what it is like to play for the Gold Coast Football Club and more importantly what steps they followed, from playing school boy football only a few years ago, to now being part of an AFL Club.
All schools showed fantastic enthusiasm and skills throughout the competition with the winners of the boys competition for overall sportsmanship and good football spirit were Kings Christian College and for the Girls - Emmanuel College.
