MULTICULTURAL PROGRAMS
The Gold Coast SUNS work closely with the Multicultural Communities Council Gold Coast to deliver programs and activity both in the Northern Growth Corridor and the entire Gold Coast region.
The Gold Coast SUNS and AFL Queensland have recently come together with the Gold Coast Community, launch and deliver the AFL Multicultural program on the Gold Coast. The program encourages local families from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds to participate in football through such programs as Auskick.
Multicultural Ambassadors Michael Rischitelli and Tom Nicholls, are just two of the many players involved in the program that gives our next generation the chance to participate in the game of AFL.
In 2011, the Gold Coast SUNS in partnership with AFL Queensland and the MCCGC ran an 8 week Auskick program at Upper Coomera State College.
Gold Coast SUNS players Tom Nicholls and Brandon Matera participated in the program with over 60 participants from a (CALD) background to encourage them in playing AFL, many for the very first time.
The highlight of the program was that all participants were invited to participate at half time of the Gold Coast SUNS vs Western Bulldogs game on June 25 – 2011 in front of well over 15,000 people.
INDIGENOUS PROGRAMS
The Gold Coast SUNS in conjunction with AFL Cape York, NPA College and NPARC are proud to have launched the “No Boundaries” partnership program, aimed at those located in the remote communities of the Northern Peninsula Area.
The program will saw Indigenous Ambassadors Jarrod Harbrow and Rex Liddy and other Gold Coast SUNS players Alik Magin and Roland Achee, travel to the NPA to work closely with local advocacy groups in the 5 communities of the Northern Peninsula Area in two visits (one in March) and (one in July) throughout 2011.
As part of the program, the club welcomed and hosted the NPA “legends” from the NPA region. This group of 8 high school students had the opportunity to travel to and experience a week on the Gold Coast in which they gained many new experiences on the Gold Coast, including seeing the team train live and watching the team run out against the Adelaide Crows.
