The Gold Coast SUNS as part of its work in the Community are contributing to schools and assisting students throughout the Gold Coast region.

The GC SUNS have worked closely with its AFL Queensland counterparts to assist the continual growth of AFL in schools through existing activities like Auskick, school football and sport education. On top of this the Club is now proud to have developed their own stand-alone programs to encourage students towards living a healthy and active lifestyle, grow awareness of beach safety and how to play AFL.

The Gold Coast SUNS as part of their work in the Community are proud to provide to students and schools the innovative SHINE Schools Program.

The SHINE schools program will allow the next generation to SHINE and be the best they can be and was delivered to over 2,500 students at 26 schools in 2015.

Each student who participates in the FREE six hour program that is run over a four week period will experience firsthand and learn about:

  • Being healthy
  • Being active
  • Beach safety
  • Playing AFL

What makes the SHINE program unique is that it is the first of its kind delivered in a three-way partnership consisting of the GC SUNS players and staff, City of Gold Coast Lifeguards and the AFL Queensland Game Development team. This innovative program is made possible by the generous support of the Queensland Government.

The program will run for the first four weeks during school time for one hour a week targeting Grade 4 students.

Each student will receive a colour booklet to use and work through as part of the program and will get to interact with the players in person as they deliver the program, before participating in a fun based carnival at Metricon Stadium with other schools as a way of celebrating the conclusion of the program.
