SHINE and School Activity

The Gold Coast SUNS as part of its work in the Community are contributing to schools and assisting students throughout the Gold Coast region.

Not only does the club work closely with its AFL Queensland counterparts to assist in the development of the game in the schools through various activities like Auskick, School football and Sport Education, the club are now proud to have launched our own stand alone programs to encourage students in being healthy and active, awareness of beach safety and Playing AFL.

SHINE SCHOOLS PROGRAM

The Gold Coast SUNS as part of our work in the Community are proud to provide to students and schools within the Community, the new and innovative “SHINE” Schools Program.

The “SHINE” schools program will allow the next generation to “SHINE” and be the best they can be.

Each student who participates in the FREE six hour program that is run over a four week period will experience first hand and learn about:

Being healthy
Being active
Beach safety
Playing AFL

What makes the “SHINE” program unique is that it will be the first of its kind delivered in three-way partnership.

The Gold Coast SUNS players, GCCC Lifeguards and the AFL Queensland Game Development team have come together to deliver the program, through the generous support of the Queensland Government and McDonald’s Gold Coast.

Each student will receive a colour booklet to use and work through as part of the program and will interact with the players in person as they deliver the program, before participating in a fun based carnival at Metricon Stadium with other schools as a way of celebrating the conclusion of the program.

The program will run for the first 3 weeks in school time (1 hour a week) for Grade 4 students.

The program has been delivered to over 2000 students in 26 schools in 2011 through 12,000 hours of direct program delivery.

“SHINE” has already had great success in 2012 seeing over 450 children over 5 schools in term 1 alone, with the remainder of the school year yet to see over 25 more schools.

“SHINE” 2012 is again taking another giant step forward thanks to the wonderful support from the Queensland Government and McDonald’s Gold Coast. This innovative program will again be a great success and fun learning experience for all students who participate in 2012.
