Community Spirit on Show as SUNS rise for early morning clean up

Exclusive to goldcoastfc.com.au 3:09pm AEDT Friday, February 1, 2013

Helping The Hinterland Timmy Sumner and Tom Nicholls climbed Tambourine Mountain early this morning to help the locals get back on their feet after the severe storms of last weekend.

I’m really pleased that Timmy and I were able to join with the Gold FM team today and spend a few hours up here in the Gold Coast Hinterland.
The Gold Coast SUNS have spent the day travelling to areas most affected by last weeks savage storms, assisting with the massive clean up operation and helping to deliver much-needed supplies to locals still doing it tough.

From sunrise GC SUNS newest recruit Timmy Sumner along with developing ruckman Tom Nicholls teamed up with Gold FM’s morning breakfast crew “Richard, Bridge and Spida” visiting Mount Tamborine and other areas of the Hinterland affected by the storms as part of the stations recovery efforts.

The spent the morning door knocking locals, many of them still without power, armed with bread, milk, bottled water, toiletries, cleaning products and other essentials which they distributed to some very grateful locals.

The boys also assisted the Gold FM team to distribute more than 200 bacon and egg muffins, generously supplied by the local McDonald’s restaurant.

Speaking exclusively with goldcoastfc.com.au, Nicholls said it had been a pleasure be able to make even a small contribution to the clean up effort.

“I’m really pleased that Timmy and I were able to join with the Gold FM team today and spend a few hours up here in the Gold Coast Hinterland, there is so much to be done and it’s great to see so many willing to assist the local residents are struggling a bit at the moment.” Said Nicholls

It’s not the first time the Yarrawonga product has assisted in a storm clean up with the promising Ruckman part of the Clubs Ipswich clean up team following the 2011 Queensland floods.

“Last time, a number of GC SUNS players and staff made the trip up north to Ipswich – which was one of the worst affected areas at time.”

“The images from the last clean-up are still very raw to me… but for the Timmy (Sumner) and I to be able to come out here and put a smile on some of these families is really rewarding for us.”

Meanwhile, exciting GC SUNS recruits Clay Cameron, Andrew Boston, Jesse Lonergan and Leigh Osborne ventured south-of-the -border alongside a host of GC SUNS staff members  who spent the day cleaning up storm debris, scattered along Chinderah Bay Drive in Northern New South Wales.

General Manager of Community, Marketing and Membership Kelly Ryan said it had been a tough, but rewarding day for both staff and players.

“The playground and park area was heavily impacted by the recent storms and is a popular spot for families on weekends and so clearing it of tonnes of rubbish and getting it back into shape for locals to enjoy again was a really rewarding task for the whole club” said Ryan.
