The Gold Coast SUNS have re-signed their number one ruckman ahead of the 2013 AFL Season after towering ruckman Zac Smith firmly recommitted to the club by agreeing to a multi-year contract extension.

The Rockhampton-raised Smith exploded onto the AFL scene after an exciting debut season with the GC SUNS in 2011, with his performances earning an AFL Rising Star nomination and national representative honours in the International Rules Series.

Despite the 2012 AFL Season being a quiet year for Smith, the rising star is set to take his game to another level this year under the tutelage of GC SUNS assistant coach (and Port Adelaide ruckman) Matthew Primus.

Speaking at the GC SUNS major player announcement, a jubilant Smith told reporters he was looking forward to continuing his thriving AFL career at Metricon Stadium.

“I’m really excited (to re-sign)… I’ve been here since day one of the SUNS and it’s been an exciting five years,” said Smith.

“I’m really excited about the future and where the Club is heading.”

GC SUNS General Manager Football Operations Manager Marcus Ashcroft said Smith’s signature was a significant one for the Club, with AFL rivals still attempting to carry out poaching raids on a quickly diminishing pool of out of contract GC SUNS players.

“Zac has been part of the Club for five years… To have all your players wanting to stay with your team is a show of faith by them and also a show of faith by the Club,” said Ashcroft.

“(We’re) very happy our players are looking forward to being part of our Club for a long period of time and hopefully they’re all part of a premiership side in the not-too-distant future.”
