Talented Gold Coast utility Luke Russell revealed his decision to stay in Queensland came down to a desire to be part of the impending success that his club is on the cusp of.

In late September, Russell turned his back on rival offers to sign a two-year deal that will extend his stint at Carrara to seven seasons.

After joining the club for the VFL season and going through the teething pains associated with an expansion club, Russell said he was not about to miss out on a future that appears so promising.

“I really had a good think about it over the break; I do love it up here. The boys up here, I get along with them really well and we’ve been together now for about five years as a core group. That really helped my decision to stay on the Gold Coast,” Russell told SUNS TV.

“I’m excited about where we’re going as a club. My decision to stay was purely on that and I’m looking forward to the next couple of years up here.”

The 22-year-old has played all over the ground during his time at Metricon Stadium and admits he is happy to play wherever Rodney Eade and the coaching group want him. The Tasmanian has identified a spot on the wing as his preferred position, though.

“I want to be playing each week, so wherever the coach puts me I’m going to be happy to play. But, I’m hoping to secure a spot on the wing - that’s actually where I want to be at,” Russell said.

“I spoke to Rocket, he’s been great since he’s been here. I’ve told him that’s my preferred position, obviously I’ve got to earn it, there’s a lot of quality players up here that want to play there as well.

“We’re going to have a lot of good depth which is another strong thing for this club and I’m hoping I can secure a spot on the wing, but I’m happy to move around, as well as long as I’m playing.”

Russell had his season prematurely ended when he underwent hip surgery following the SUNS’ round 18 loss to the Brisbane Lions in an attempt to resolve an issue that had plagued him throughout 2014.

The Burnie Dockers product recently rejoined full training following the completion of his rehabilitation program and is determined to remain sound for the duration of the pre-season.
