It was always going to happen, it just take time and a lot of honest discussion about expectations and ambitions.

We could be talking about Gary Ablett’s new deal or a return to the winner’s circle for the SUNS.

Neither have happened yet but they are oh so close.

The SUNS emerged from their slumber at Simonds Stadium yesterday but have nothing to show for a courageous performance.

After two weeks of harsh self-assessement following substandard performances, the team most pundits expected to see from the outset of the 2015 season shed its lethargy to show just what it might be capable of under Rodney Eade.

But after laying the foundations in the first half, the SUNS were gunned down in the third term before storming home in the final term only to be held at bay by nine-points.

With a performance of significant courage, the Cats yesterday claimed their first win this season — a thrilling nine-point defeat of the Gold Coast.

While the SUNS produced their best performance for 2015, their wastefulness early and an inability to run over an injury-stricken rival late continued their autumn of malaise.

The Gold Coast, insipid against Melbourne and St Kilda in the opening fortnight, were showing some spine and led by 12 points. That margin should have been greater but for the Suns’ inaccuracy.

IT WAS the shock factor which made it stand out at first.

Joel Selwood streaming out of a centre bounce isn’t normally something that takes you by surprise.

But when he burst away at the three-minute mark of the third quarter on Sunday, it was eye-opening simply for the fact that Geelong hadn’t looked anything like doing that for the previous two quarters.

Gold Coast had smashed the Cats around the ball which was why they led by two goals at half-time.

Gold Coast defender Trent McKenzie - who was dropped by coach Rodney Eade after the SUNS' listless round-one loss to Melbourne - also played a big role on Cats danger man Steve Johnson.

Eade said his side's effort was vastly improved compared to its first two rounds against Melbourne and St Kilda.
