Gold Coast SUNS captain Gary Ablett is confident the club can win a premiership before he draws the curtains on his distinguished career.

The dual Brownlow medallist ended speculation surrounding his playing future by re-signing with Gold Coast for a further three seasons, tying him to the games 17th franchise until the end of 2018.

Ablett’s football resume is peerless, but despite winning two flags with Geelong (in 2007 and 2009) before moving to southern Queensland, the pursuit of a maiden premiership with the SUNS was a major factor in his decision to recommit to the club.

“I do see a very bright future, I just want to help the football club win a premiership. That’s why we exist, that’s why we are here. (I’m) super excited about jumping into that,” Ablett told the media at Metricon Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

“Obviously its been a disappointing start to the season, but I think the club’s heading in the right direction. We’ve got the right people around the club, a great bunch of guys.”

Rodney Eade’s men are yet to record a win in 2015, but after two disappointing performances in the opening couple of rounds, the SUNS proved they are on the right track with a spirited performance against Geelong on Sunday afternoon.

Gold Coast’s poor start to the season has prompted some media analysts to question the direction the club is headed in. Despite the frustrating start to the year, Ablett is confident the SUNS are building the right foundations to challenge for that elusive premiership in the coming seasons.

“Without a doubt (SUNS can win a premiership during Ablett’s time). Like I’ve said, its been a disappointing start to the season but I’ve got no doubt we’ll bounce back,” Ablett said.

“There’s still a lot of areas of the game that we need to improve in as a group but I think we’ve got the right man here to help us do that.

“We go out every training session trying to improve, and we’ll make sure that from now forward, first of all the effort will be there week in, week out and I’ve got no doubt we can win a premiership in that time.”
