GOLD Coast's nightmare year has taken another twist, with rookie ruckman Keegan Brooksby suffering a blood clot that will rule him out for the rest of the season.

Brooksby noticed swelling in his arm early in the week and was taken to hospital, where he still remains.

The 25-year-old is doing well at the moment and in no immediate danger.

Gold Coast general manager of football Marcus Ashcroft confirmed the news.

"Earlier in the week Keegan presented with swelling in his arm," Ashcroft told AFL.com.au.

"Medical staff discovered a clot in the large vein in his arm and Keegan was subsequently admitted to hospital for ongoing investigation and management.

"Keegan will be required to remain in hospital for a few days and he will receive medication, which will preclude him from training and playing.

"Unfortunately, it is anticipated that Keegan will not play again this season."

It adds another chapter to the season from hell for the Suns.

They have been decimated by injuries to key players including skipper Gary Ablett, Jaeger O'Meara, David Swallow and Dion Prestia, as well as being embroiled in drug and alcohol controversies.

Brooksby has done an outstanding job after being taken at pick No.42 in the 2015 AFL Rookie Draft.

Originally drafted to help the Suns' struggling NEAFL team with another mature body, the South Australian forced his way into the senior team in round nine.

He has played three games and kicked two goals in his most recent performance against North Melbourne in a round 14 victory.

Brooksby was the travelling emergency for Saturday's game against Adelaide.

"The club’s medical and welfare teams have been in ongoing dialogue with Keegan’s family in South Australia and will continue to work collaboratively with them," Ashcroft said.
