Gold Coast midfielder duo Mitch Hallahan and Alex Sexton will not play again this season, with the young pair joining a wealth of midfield talent on the sidelines for the remainder of 2015.

Hallahan has endured a roller-coaster maiden season at Metricon Stadium with the former Hawthorn inside midfielder producing the best patch of his career during the year around injury interruptions.

After missing the last two weeks due to a rare condition – a bone growing in his upper arm – the medical team have decided to draw his season to a close in order to get on top of the condition.

“Unfortunately Mitch Hallahan won’t be back for us this year. He’s got an unusual condition which is just where a little bit of extra bone is growing,” GC SUNS head physiotherapist Adam Russell told SUNS TV on Tuesday night.

“Unfortunately it’s in a really prominent spot in his arm, so anytime he gets any contact on it it’s quite sore. Unfortunately we’ve run out of time this year for him to get back.

“We will continue to monitor him for the next two or three months. There’s the opportunity if all goes well that we will be able to take that bone out over the offseason.”

Local product, Sexton, thrived under new coach Rodney Eade this season, playing a variety of different roles throughout the season with his run-with jobs the pick of his year.

He has battled through persistent lateral knee problems for a couple of months, and it has been decided that the best course of action is for Sexton to rest in order to overcome the issue.

“Alex Sexton won’t be back this year. That lateral knee pain that he’s had the last few months has got a bit worse and we’re not able to manage it anymore,” Russell said.

“So he’ll be rested for the ret of the year, that will be monitored over the next couple of weeks. Whether he needs some minor work done will be determined in the coming weeks.”

Key defender Rory Thompson won’t play in Saturday’s QClash after being substituted out of last weekend’s draw against West Coast with an ankle injury. And classy defender Nick Malceski is considered likely to play despite injuring his quad early in the game against the Eagles.
