Will Brodie is excited to be making his AFL debut, a moment he has been looking forward to for some time.

Selected with pick No. 9 in last year’s National Draft, the 18-year-old will run out for the Gold Coast SUNS against Melbourne this Saturday in Alice Springs.

Not that the location is a big factor for Brodie.

“It’s a bit out there but I’m really excited and can’t wait” he told the media on Thursday afternoon.

A debut game has been looming for the 18-year-old, with Brodie having to wait that little bit longer than fellow draftees Jack Bowes, Ben Ainsworth and Brad Scheer.

“Yeah obviously I’ve wanted to debut for a long time. The last nine weeks watching them play and it’s something I’ve always wanted to do so it probably makes this weekend even more special” he said.

The Victorian’s ability to take on feedback from the coaches has seen his game continue to develop since stepping foot inside the Club.

“Coming into the system, I’ve just been trying to learn as much as I can.

“In terms of feedback from the coaches, a lot of my running and running patterns, and defensive stuff that I’ve been really working on” he said.

As with all debutants, Senior Coach Rodney Eade will personally take Brodie through the finer details of his role come Saturday.

“I’ve just been told to play my game. The way I’ve played footy for the last five or six years is just that (winning the contested ball).

“I take pride in my contested stuff and my ability to win the footy. I’m just going to play my footy and play with freedom and that will come along.”
