Immediately after Saturday night’s loss to Carlton, captain Steven May pulled the players in and addressed the group on the Metricon Stadium turf.

The theme of the discussion revolved around the need to focus on training and to prepare well to avoid starting games too slowly according to experienced wingman Matt Rosa.

Carlton came out firing, having eight shots at goal in the first term compared to two for the SUNS and they continued to hold the lead for a majority of the game.

“We’ve got to make sure that during the week we’re doing everything we can and training at our peak so that come first quarters, we’re really ready to go” Rosa told SUNS TV after the game.

“We were a little bit off early and we’ve got to fix that.”

The SUNS were able to work their way into the game to eventually take the lead in the final term before the Blues finished the stronger of the two teams.

“We gave them too big of a head start really.

“We fought our way back but unfortunately we let them back in it in the last 10 minutes.”

The loss was compounded by a serious injury to Michael Barlow, who suffered a fractured fibula.

The SUNS’ players will rally around the influential midfielder, who plays an important leadership role both on and off the field.

“He’s been great for us and is a ripping fellow and great leader around the club.

“We’ll wrap our arms around him and look after him.”

The focus will quickly shift to the Round 14 clash against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium as the SUNS look to bounce back.

Rosa reinforced the need for the team to prepare well for the crucial clash.

“Next week is a really important game for us.

“We’ll throw everything at the Saints, they had a good win so we’re looking forward to a tough challenge.”
