David Swallow and his teammates are keen to hit the ground running in Gold Coast’s season opener in Cairns.

With Stuart Dew in charge, there has been plenty of hard work out on the training track in preparation for Saturday’s game against North Melbourne.

There’s been a noticeable shift in mind-set from the playing group, with every player keen to play their role.

“With Dewy coming in, we’ve just focused on playing 18-man footy and a lot more of a defensive mind-set for this year,” Swallow told the media on Wednesday.

“If we can get everyone playing their role, I think we’re going to be in games for a lot longer than previous years.”

This Saturday’s game gives the SUNS another opportunity to continue their work on implementing the new game plan.

North Melbourne have plenty of strong bodies in the midfield and will provide a stern test for Swallow and co in the contest.

“We definitely respect the opposition and what they’re capable of," Swallow said.

“They had some good form throughout the JLT, so we’re definitely going to respect them going up there.

“It’s an opportunity for us and we’re definitely going up there for the win.”
