Prior to the season, you would have got long odds on Alex Sexton being Gold Coast's leading goalkicker.

The versatile 24-year-old has been played all over the ground in his 96-game career, but under new coach Stuart Dew has made a home for himself in the SUNS' forward line.

Following four goals against Brisbane on Saturday night, including some exquisite finishes from difficult angles, Sexton has now kicked 27 for the year, seven clear of Aaron Young and Tom Lynch.

"I love Al," Dew said following the four-point loss to the Lions.

"He's a great player around the club. He's had a really good year and he does go under the radar externally.

"I've been quite surprised. He's one, in my first month or two, where I thought, why haven't I heard more about this guy?

"I think he's had a terrific year."

Sexton has played primarily as a wingman in his seven-year career, but also spent time at half-back, half-forward and also onball.

He says Dew stationing him in the forward 50 has provided clarity in his game and allowed him to flourish.

Just two weeks before his outing against Brisbane, Sexton kicked five goals against Melbourne in a lone-hand effort at the MCG.

He has also kicked three goals in games against Fremantle, St Kilda and the huge upset win over Sydney.

"Dewy has been great this year in building trust and building tight relationships within the club and driving home the importance that it's a footy club and we're all a part of it," Sexton said.

"He's been amazing and personally giving me the clarity in my role.

"I think he's the right man for the job."

Sexton will have one more opportunity to add to his career-high haul of goals when the SUNS attempt to play spoiler against a Geelong outfit that needs to win to secure a top-eight spot.

"It's a pretty hostile environment at their home ground. It's another challenge. We want to finish strong and see ourselves as a quality footy side when we're up and going."
