Season recap:

Alex Sexton played every game of the season for the first time in 2018. Winning the SUNS’ Most Improved award at the Club Champion, Sexton’s form only got better as the season wore on. He was used in a couple of roles, predominately as a pressure goal-scoring forward, but also enjoyed stints on the wing and the occasional run-with role. His flexibility made him a big asset to Stuart Dew, but Sexton also said the consistency of playing the majority of his football in the forward line helped his game this year.

Best performances:

Sexton was a force to be reckoned with in Round 20 against the Demons, kicking five goals including a monster from the wing. His performance in QClash16 was also a season highlight with four goals and 19 disposals earning him his first ever Brownlow vote.

Moment of the season:

There were some highlights to choose from, including a goal of the year contender, but it’s hard to go past Sexton’s monster bomb from 78 metres.

What’s next?:

After finishing the year with 28 goals to his name, the most of any SUN, Sexton will be hoping to increase that number again in 2019. If this season was his breakout year, Sexton will have plenty more to offer on the field next year.

From the coach:

“I’d say Secco is probably our surprise packet from the year. He was super consistent playing in the forward line and winning the Most Improved award at the Club Champion was a good reward for effort. We always know what we’re going to get with Secco, but sometimes he still surprises us with what he’s able to do. I’m looking forward to seeing him develop further next year.” Stuart Dew
