The ground record crowd at Metricon Stadium is set to be broken when the Gold Coast SUNS host AFL heavyweight Collingwood in early July with ticket sales going through the roof for the blockbuster match against Australia’s most famous sporting club.

The GC SUNS recorded their biggest crowd in their inaugural AFL season with in 2011, with 23,302 football fans converging on the newly-developed Metricon Stadium to watch the young SUNS outfit come up against the then defending premier Collingwood.

The team’s stunning victory over the Geelong Cats last Saturday night has created buzz heading in to the clash with the Magpies in 11 days’ time.

The round 16 encounter on July 5 has been officially declared a ‘Reserved Seat’ match with the club’s GM – Marketing, Community and Fan Development, Kelly Ryan, urging fans to secure their seats as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

“The buzz throughout Metricon Stadium during the Geelong game was quite incredible, and anyone who experienced that will be super-keen to be back at the ground for the clash with the Magpies,” Ms Ryan said.

“Last time Collingwood visited, we had almost 20,000 fans at the ground and they got to see the GC SUNS post a sensational seven-point win over the Magpies last year.

“Ticket sales for the game have already been incredibly strong. With the match declared a reserved seat game, GC SUNS members with General Admission access will need to upgrade their entry if they wish to secure a seat for the encounter.

“The ground record is most definitely within reach and it would be great to see all GC SUNS members and supporters come out to Metricon Stadium on July 5 to see if our team can claim another big scalp this season.”

In 2014, the GC SUNS have already had bumper crowds of over 18,000 at three home games. The tally includes the 21,354 who watched Lance Franklin’s first visit to the Gold Coast with the Sydney Swans in round 12 while 18,236 witnessed the club’s first victory over a top-four outfit against Geelong.
