When Gold Coast’s latest debutant Wil Powell snapped on his non-preferred boot just 10 minutes into the match against Collingwood, he etched his name into the record books.

Powell was only minutes into his debut game when Touk Miller drove the ball inside 50 in the direction of Peter Wright searching for the SUNS’ second goal.

Jack Martin was waiting at the edge of the contest and when the ball went to ground, calmly scooped it up and raised his eyes.

What he saw was the 18-year-old Powell streaming past hoping eagerly for his first touch of the footy.

Without so much as a second thought, Martin gave a quick handball over the top to the first-gamer who outstretched his right arm to one-handedly rein in the Sherrin.

With Collingwood defender Jack Crisp closing in quickly, Powell had a split-second to throw the ball onto his left foot and get his shot away.

As soon as the ball left his boot Powell knew it was on-target.

In that instant, the West-Australian draftee became a member of the first kick-first goal club, joining fellow first-year player Jacob Heron who did the same in Shanghai.

“(I was) super pumped after that one,” Powell told SUNS TV post-match.

“I got up and all the boys were around me.

“I was there for the crumbs if Jacky didn’t have it, then I kept running and just looked at him.

“He saw me and gave it over and the rest is history.”

Powell was impressive on debut, collecting 10 disposals in the forward line and reeling in four marks.

He says despite not being able to register the win, he was proud of the way the boys toiled to the very end

“We fought hard, our last 40 minutes of the game was exceptional,” Powell said.

“We played with heart and everything went our way.

“But running out on that ground for the first time against a top-four side and giving it to them for most of the game was incredible.”
