The Gold Coast SUNS will kick off the 2022 NAB AFLW Season with a blockbuster match in Mackay for Round 1 of the competition on Sunday January 9.

The 10-round fixture for the 2022 NAB AFLW Premiership Season was announced today with the SUNS set to begin the season in Mackay, play three matches at Metricon Stadium and one at Fankhauser Reserve, Southport Sharks.

After facing GWS at Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay, the team will then fly to Perth to take on the West Coast Eagles before back-to-back matches at Metricon Stadium in Rounds 3 and 4.

Round 3 will be the third AFLW QClash with the SUNS hosting the Brisbane Lions in a Saturday night primetime fixture.

The Richmond Tigers will travel north in Round 4, where the SUNS will be looking to recreate the performance that saw the club record its first win in the AFLW competition in Round 2, 2020.

The SUNS will travel to take on the Melbourne Demons in Round 5 before returning to the Gold Coast to host the Geelong Cats at Fankhauser Reserve at Southport Sharks for Round 6.

The club will close out the season with an away match against the Western Bulldogs (Round 7), home match against St Kilda at Metricon Stadium (Round 8), followed by an away match against Carlton (Round 9).

Round 10 of the 2022 NAB AFLW Premiership Season is yet to be announced.

Gold Coast SUNS Head of Women’s Football Fiona Sessarago welcomed the opportunity to play home matches at three different venues.

“We’re really excited to be able to kick off our season for Round 1 in Mackay and are hoping for some great support from our members and fans up there,” Sessarago said.

“To have three matches at our home ground Metricon Stadium is a great opportunity for our players and supporters on the Gold Coast, as well as a game at Southport.

“The players and coaches have been putting in a mountain of hard work throughout pre-season and we’re really excited to show our members and fans what we’re capable of in 2022.”

The 2022 NAB AFLW Season begins on Friday January 7.
