The Gold Coast SUNS have today joined the Gold Coast Homelessness Network to help launch the 16th Gold Coast Connect 2 Home donation drive at People First Stadium.
The annual Connect 2 Home event, which aims to provide immediate relief for Gold Coasters experiencing or at risk of homelessness, will be hosted at People First Stadium for the 11th time on Wednesday, August 6.
Escalating challenges for the Gold Coast community including reduced access to safe and affordable housing and cost of living pressures have compelled many to seek assistance from charitable organisations for the first time.
As part of today’s donation drive launch, the Gold Coast Homelessness Network is calling on the support from the broader Gold Coast community to support those in need by providing non-perishable food items, food vouchers, clothing and toiletries at designated collections points across the region.
Chairperson Maria Leebeek says a key focus for this year’s event is providing the community with resources that can be accessed and utilised year-round.
“It’s fantastic to have the continuing relationships and support from all of our partners, including the continued support from the Gold Coast SUNS,” Leebeek said.
“We know that people are doing it tough and they need our support.
“What we really want to do on the day is provide people with information on services where they can go for the rest of the year, but also offer immediate support through clothes and food.
“Whilst we’re seeking the generous support of our community members, we recognise that people are doing it hard so we’re also looking for the support of our corporate and business communities. If you’ve got some off-season clothes, or supplies in a surplus, please consider donating those.
“If you need to know where our donation bins are here, please head to our website or give us a call. Your donations are needed and incredibly appreciated.”
Gold Coast SUNS Chief Executive Mark Evans said, “We are proud to once again play a key role in providing the venue and support for the Connect 2 Home event.
“It’s the one event where you can see everybody on the Gold Coast trying to do something for someone else who is in need.
“My plea to everybody when you wake up tomorrow morning and think it’s a bit cold, have a think about those people who are living rough, perhaps without access to heating and could do with some support. If you have the opportunity to provide non-perishable food items, toiletries, food vouchers or anything you think might help, that would be incredibly appreciated.”
