Bluey turns back the clock

When he speaks you just want to take in every piece of advice he offers.
Gold Coast SUNS senior coach Guy McKenna wound back the clock going head-to-head against defenders Matthew Warnock and Seb Tape in a series of defensive drills at this morning’s light training session.

The brave pair were taken through an individual coaching clinic by the former West Coast-halfback flanker, who tortured opposing forwards during his 267 career games as a player.

“Bluey” was instrumental in delivering two premierships to the Eagles (1992, 94), featuring alongside one of the most feared backlines in AFL history.

With the assistance of GC SUNS assistant coach - Andy Lovell, McKenna demonstrated the importance of positioning against quality opposition.

The session also included the skilled defenders having to spoil a marking contest and chase ground balls against a forceful McKenna.

While Tape is regarded as the most fearless competitor at the club, it was Warnock who was forced to be the steadying influence in the back half last season after the club’s back-six came under siege – hurt deeply by injuries and suspensions.

Speaking exclusively with goldcoastfc.com.au, Warnock spoke candidly of his individual session with Bluey, saying he hung on to every word given by the respected head coach.

“When he speaks you just want to take in every piece of advice he offers.

“There are certainly bits and pieces that he’s said to me previously that I’ve taken away and implemented during a game situation.”

Warnock added: “He (McKenna) was a dual¬-premiership player and multiple club champion… he knows what it takes to win.”

After being the only experienced defender at times last season, Warnock said he’s delighted to see more season bodies at the club, in particularly with new recruits Tom Murphy and Greg Broughton.

“Their arrival certainly alleviates potential pressure off our back half.

“Last year we were hit with an array of injuries to key players like Nathan Bock and Jarrod Harbrow, so knowing that there are players who can step in and fill that void is important for us going forward.”
