Recalled Gold Coast SUNS defender Jack Hutchins hopes to get a second crack at senior footy this season against the Demons in Melbourne on Sunday.

Hutchins got a half of game-time against Hawthorn last week at Metricon Stadium when he came on as substitute in place of Luke Russell.

He has been named in the GC SUNS’ 25-man squad for the clash with the Dees, but he will be fighting it out with other backline options Jeremy Taylor and Tom Murphy for the spot vacated by Clay Cameron, who is out for the next few weeks with a shoulder injury.

“It’s bad news for Clay; obviously he was playing really good footy,” Hutchins said.

“There’s certainly a lot of boys putting their hands up in the reserves that will fill that role, as well.

“It’s just basically what comes down to match-ups and that sort of thing.”

Hutchins kicked multiple goals in half of the NEAFL games he played last season while he has also spent time in the midfield at the lower level.

The 22-year-old admits a preference for staying down back, although he will play whichever role is required to stay in the top side.

“It’s been good being up in the midfield and down forward, as well.

“Sort of having that mixture and variety certainly adds another string to the bow.

“It’s wherever the coach wants me, I guess.”
