Gold Coast SUNS have been dealt a major injury blow with leaders David Swallow and Nick Malceski both set to miss this weekend’s match against the Brisbane Lions at Metricon Stadium.

Swallow had scans on Monday to determine the extent of a knee injury suffered during the last quarter of Saturday night’s game against the Giants in Canberra.

Swallow’s scans revealed a strain to his right PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) and as a result he will be sidelined for a minimum of 8-10 weeks.

General Manager - Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft, said Swallow would consult with a specialist tomorrow where it would be determined if surgery is required.

"The results of David's scans have confirmed a PCL strain to his right knee. David and the club will determine the most appropriate way to treat the injury after consulting a specialist tomorrow.

"The timeframe that David will be sidelined for is still to be determined. We do know that if no surgery is required he will miss a minimum of 8-10 weeks," Ashcroft said.

Ashcroft also confirmed Nick Malceski will miss two weeks due to knee soreness and Sam Day will miss between 4-6 weeks with a dislocated elbow.

“On the back of an unacceptable on-field performance last weekend, these injuries are disappointing and place extra responsibility on our entire playing group to persevere through adverse times. However, we are extremely confident that the character of our group will rise to the occasion,” Ashcroft said.
