On Saturday, Metricon Stadium will transform into a digital battlefield, with the Gold Coast SUNS' home of football the latest venue to be swept by the global smartphone phenomenon that is Pokemon Go.

The augmented reality mobile game has swept the globe, while closer to home, Gold Coasters have flocked to public parks, libraries and cafes’ across the coast as they look to “’catch em’ all”.

In news that will undoubtedly excite fans of Pikachu and co. across the city, the Gold Coast SUNS and Metricon Stadium will host a special Pokemon Go event in conjunction with the team’s round 18 match against Fremantle this weekend.

Active users of the game will be pleased to learn Metricon Stadium’s PokeStop will be raining with pink confetti, with a lure to be placed at the precinct.

Those playing Pokemon Go at the match will also have the opportunity to win a signed 2016 SUNS Guernsey. Users are encouraged to capture their most creative Pokemon Go image and upload to Instagram or Twitter using the #PokemonGoAtMetricon tag.

The event is expected to receive a strong influx of local support, thanks in part to the stadium’s high density Wi-Fi powered by club partner Huawei. This means Pokemon Go users will be able to take advantage of the lures on offer without being concerned about their data.

Gold Coast CEO Andrew Travis, said the Pokemon Go event would shape as one of many future digital offerings for fans at Metricon Stadium, as the club looks to blaze the trail for stadium innovation.

“We are thrilled that Metricon Stadium, the Gold Coast’s home for AFL football, will play host to a special Pokemon Go event this Saturday,” Travis said.

“Gold Coasters have become highly engaged in the virtual online world, and we feel there is a terrific opportunity for our club to align and provide further value to our match-day experience by hosting such an event.

“The Gold Coast SUNS have led the way and become pioneers in the area of stadium innovation, with Metricon Stadium now the only fully Wi-Fi-connected stadium in Queensland.

“We are excited and look forward to welcoming all Pokemon Go fans to Metricon Stadium.”

The Gold Coast SUNS have announced they will be placing lures on the Metricon Stadium PokeStop, located at the Light Tower Bar on the Eastern wing, from gates open until first bounce.

Lures will once again be available at half time and post-game for the enjoyment of those attending the match.

After catching all the Pokemon at Metricon Stadium, fans will be able to jump the queue and order their food and beverages without leaving their seats on the new mobile ordering service available through the Metricon Stadium App.

“Our mobile ordering, powered by NAB Dash, allows users to order and pay for snacks and drinks right from their seat – all from a touch of button, through Metricon Stadium’s very own smartphone app which can be downloaded via the iTunes store and Google Play," Travis added.
