Gold Coast SUNS assistant coach Matthew Primus believes this weekend’s NAB Cup match against the Sydney Swans will be the ultimate pre-season test for the playing group, with the reigning premiers hungry to register a win after struggling to find form through the NAB Cup tournament.

Primus told reporters that it was time for the players to take their game to another level after showing glimpses of their enormous potential in the SUNS impressive win over Hawthorn in their NAB Cup opener at Metricon Stadium.

“We’re certainly looking for a step up in intensity from the playing group this week... it’ll be the Swan’s last game before they prepare themselves for Round 1 so we’ll be expecting to get a great challenge over there,” said Primus.

With the Swans likely to recall a number of their premiership players including dual-Brownlow Medallist Adam Goodes for the NAB Cup clash, Primus admitted the SUNS  would field a fairly solid team, despite Gary Ablett and Karmichael Hunt being rested.

“We’ll definitely be looking to take over a pretty strong squad to try and win the game,” Primus said.

“There likely to be bringing back five or six premiership players into their side so it’ll be a great opportunity for us to test our game plan against quality opposition, but in particularly against the reigning premiers.”

Meanwhile, key midfielders Dion Prestia, Michael Rischitelli and Danny Stanley are likely to push for senior selection after gaining valuable match fitness through the NEAFL competition against Aspley last week.

“Prior to heading to Townsville we didn’t think we’d be able to rotate as much as we did given the activation of the heat policy, so that’s why (Dion) Prestia, (Michael) Rischitelli and (Danny) Stanley played with the Reserves over the weekend,” Primus said.

“But the three of them would be considered pretty good chances to come in I would have thought, (Brandon) Matera also got through unscathed in the clash against the Kangaroos so hopefully we can increase his game minutes in the NAB Cup contest this Saturday night.”
