Defenders Trent McKenzie and Danny Stanley remain a chance to play in the Gold Coast SUNS’ clash against the Sydney Swans at Metricon Stadium on Sunday despite both carrying shoulder injuries.

22-year-old McKenzie sent an injury scare through the SUNS’ camp during Sunday’s round 11 match against the Crows at Adelaide Oval after the superboot injured his left shoulder in a marking contest.

He left the field immediately and played no further part in the match, and was substituted at the three-quarter time break for Sean Lemmens.

However, after being further assessed by specialists on Tuesday , GC SUNS high performance manager Stephen Schwerdt confirmed to goldcoastfc.com.au the club received a positive report.

“Trent had some shoulder instability during the game, and although he was in a bit of pain, he probably could have played on, but given the circumstances but we decided to take him off,” Schwerdt said.

“He had some good reviews from the specialists this morning and we’re pretty confident he will be okay to play this week.”

Stanley, who looked worse for wear after sustaining a shoulder complaint of his own, will also be given an opportunity to play this week.

“He (Stanley) didn’t do too much today; he has been on light duties so we’ll have to see how he goes later in the week,” Schwerdt confirmed.

“We’re pretty optimistic, but he has a few things to cross off before he is available.”

Harley Bennell was ruled out of last weekend’s contest after sustaining a cork to his left calf following the side’s 45-point win over the Western Bulldogs.

The club opted to manage Bennell’s injury, but the exciting half-forward is every chance of returning to the senior team.

“Harley had a calf complaint but had a pretty good session this morning.

“Provided he continues to improve this week we’re quietly confident he will be okay.”

Rory Thompson is also a chance to reclaim his centre half-back position when teams are released on Thursday evening.
