Gold Coast defender Trent McKenzie is confident his team’s recent success at home could hold the key to upsetting top-four heavyweight Geelong.

Aside from the side’s uncharacteristic blowout defeat to Hawthorn in round four, the GC SUNS have been more than competitive at their home base, winning five of their last seven games at Metricon Stadium.

“We’re pretty confident on our home deck that we can get the job done,” McKenzie told SUNS TV.

“Just like any other team we’re going to come out fighting and hopefully get the four points.”

Ranking in the top echelon of defenders for rebound-50s this season, McKenzie has been in great form, forming a formidable backline alongside fellow rising stars Steven May and Rory Thompson.

Although he’s fully aware of the Cats’ dynamic spread and attack off half-back, the inaugural Gold Coast player believes like most games, the contest will be swayed heavily by whoever wins the stoppages.

Significantly, the Cats are the worst ranked side in the performance barometer, a vast contrast to the SUNS’ third-place standing.

“Every game, most times the ball is won out of the middle, so if we can get the ball going forward that will help us a lot.”
