Gold Coast SUNS forward Tom Lynch continued his breakout season against Essendon on Saturday, kicking his fifth bag of four goals or more this season to take his 2014 tally to 43 majors.

The SUNS spearhead booted 4.2 against the Bombers, also dishing one off to Brandon Matera, but credited his teammates for his own performance.

“Yeah, it was good to get on the end of a couple today,” Lynch told SUNS TV.

“Our kicking was pretty good in that second half which made my job easier.”

Trailing by 18 points at half-time, Gold Coast came out firing after the main break, kicking eight goals to Essendon’s four to take a one-goal lead in the early stages of the final quarter.

Unfortunately for the SUNS, the boys from Windy Hill stood up when challenged to run out eventual 19-point winners. Despite the loss, vice-captain Lynch took plenty of positives from the game.

“I thought the boys put in a pretty good performance. We just couldn’t get that goal or two goals in front,” he said.

“They had a quick reply for most of the day so it’s just disappointing to go down by two or three goals, but I think it was good to take some positives out of it and the boys really turned up to play.

“I think we can take a lot from it and know if we probably play like that in the second half of the year, we would’ve been right up there.”

While the finals are likely to be out of reach come next Sunday, the team is determined to finish 2014 on a positive note in front of a home crowd at Metricon Stadium in Round 23.

“We love playing there, we really want to finish the year on a big note. We know we can’t play finals now but we can come out next week and have a good win.”
