North Melbourne ruckman Daniel Currie will join the Gold Coast SUNS as part of a series of trades with the Kangaroos and Geelong.

As part of the trade, Zac Smith will join Geelong, in exchange for draft selections 49 & 53, with the SUNS moving selection 53 to North Melbourne in exchange for Currie.

Effectively meaning the SUNS have traded Smith for Currie and selection 49.

Currie, 26, was drafted to the Sydney with the 49th selection in the 2006 AFL Draft and played five seasons with the Swans before being delisted at the end of the 2011 Season.

Following a strong season in the SANFL for North Adelaide, his AFL dream was revived when North Melbourne selected him with the 56th pick in the 2012 AFL Draft.

General Manager - Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft, confirmed Currie’s trade to the Gold Coast.

“We are pleased to have completed a trade for Daniel,” Ashcroft said.

“He is a seasoned AFL player, and will add depth and experience to our senior list.”

Smith, an inaugural GC SUN, played 11 senior games this season, taking his career rally to 65 games in five seasons on the Gold Coast.

He was recruited as a Queensland Zone selection in 2009, playing for the club during the 2009 TAC Cup season and 2010 VFL campaign.

Ashcroft thanked Smith for his services.

“Zac has been a foundation member of our club, and has made a valuable contribution during his time on the Gold Coast,” Ashcroft said.

“We wish Zac, and his wife Aimee, all the very best for the future.”

The Gold Coast SUNS currently hold three selections (3, 16 & 19) inside the top 20 at next month’s AFL National draft. The club also holds picks 35, 49 & 58.
