There’s mixed news on the injury front at Metricon Stadium with scans confirming key defender Rory Thompson will be sidelined with an ankle injury.

The Gold Coast product hobbled off the ground in the third quarter of the SUNS’ 54-point win over Carlton with the club’s medical team to make a further assessment on the defender’s prognosis later in the week once swelling subsides.

“Rory had scans today. The doctor’s still assessing what they may look like over the next few days,” GM – Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft, told the Optomo Injury Report.

“There’s still a bit of swelling so we don’t know exactly at this point but he won’t play in the next couple of weeks and we’ll make a more accurate assessment by the end of the week.”

There’s better news for fellow defender Trent McKenzie, who suffered a nasty compound fractures to his nose in a first quarter collision with teammate Steven May and Carlton’s Levi Casboult.

‘The Cannon’ will only miss 1-2 weeks, which is positive news for the 24-year-old.

“Great news for Trent. Looked like a really severe injury on the night,” Ashcroft said.

“He’ll get corrective surgery tomorrow and then hopefully only miss the next one, maybe two weeks maximum. Got a couple of compound fractures to his nose but no concussive symptoms from the game so positive news for Trent and he should be available to play in two weeks time.”

Tasmanian Mackenzie Willis was assisted from the field late in the third quarter of the NEAFL clash against Aspley but is set to play this weekend if he can get through the SUNS’ main training session on Thursday.

“Another good bit of news for Mac. He was in a moon boot after the game and has pulled up really well the last few days,” Ashcroft said.

“He’ll train hopefully later in the week and if he gets through training he should be available to play this weekend.”

In further good news for the SUNS, Touk Miller (ankle) and Callum Ah Chee (illness) also look set to play this week against the Brisbane Lions in QClash 11.

“Both boys had a week off last week and will train tomorrow and also our main session Thursday and if they get through that with no issues then they should be available to play on Saturday,” Ashcroft said.
