With just over a week until the SUNS’ season opener in Cairns, goldcoastfc.com.au has a look at three AFL Fantasy options to consider in your backlines.
Kade Kolodjashnij (DEF) - $604,000
With Pearce Hanley not expected to play for 4-6 weeks, Kade Kolodjashnij’s AFL Fantasy stocks could be set to rise. The dashing defender had a very productive 2015 season before a change of roles in 2016 saw his fantasy average drop. After he saw his 2017 season cut short by injury, could this season be his time to shine?
Kolodjashnij looks set to resume his role off half-back this year with the SUNS boasting a relatively healthy backline. He finished first in the club’s 2km time trial earlier in the year and all signs show he has left his injury worries behind him. At just 22, Kolodjashnij’s best football is still ahead of him and despite a low-scoring JLT Series by his standards, the defender could easily average upwards of 90 if he can recapture his 2015 form.

Jarrod Harbrow (DEF) - $581,000
After averaging 82.5 fantasy points in 2017, Jarrod Harbrow is shaping up to be another safe pick ahead of the 2018 season. At 29, the half-back is one of the most experienced campaigners on the SUNS list and brings valuable leadership to the Gold Coast backline.
The veteran regularly collects 20-plus disposals a game in defence, and is coming off his best fantasy season since 2010, where he averaged 87 points in his last season at the Bulldogs. He’s at his best when he plays as a rebounding defender, and with Stuart Dew implementing a focus on defensive pressure this year, Harbrow’s output could increase. If you’re looking for a reliable fantasy option in defence this year, Harbrow could be your man.
Alex Sexton (DEF) - $437,000
Despite being used predominately as a forward over the last 12 months, Alex Sexton has been listed in defence for AFL Fantasy in 2018. It gives the 24-year-old a point of difference heading into the season which could be exploited for extra fantasy points. Playing statuses are updated after round 6, where it can be expected Sexton will be given DEF/FWD eligibility, giving coaches who pick him up added flexibility as the season goes on.
Sexton is in for a big season this year, after completing an impressive pre-season and being one of the standouts in the JLT Series for the SUNS. The forward kicked two goals in JLT1 against Geelong to register 77 points, a score which would have been more impressive if he had converted his three behinds as well. He was quieter in JLT2, only picking up the one goal and six touches for 54 points, albeit in wet conditions unsuited to goal-scorers. Sexton is every chance to improve on his average of 62 from 2017, and would be a nice option for cash generation being priced at just $437,000.
