The Gold Coast SUNS announced their pre-season JLT Community Series fixture on Thursday, with both games to be held in Queensland.

The SUNS will take on the Cats in Townsville in the second week of the competition before heading back home to face traditional rivals the Brisbane Lions at Fankhauser Reserve, the home of the Southport Sharks.

The March 11 game will be the only AFL match on the Gold Coast until June 2018, with Metricon Stadium out of action for the first half of the season due to the construction and deconstruction of the Athletics Track for the Commonwealth Games.

Southport Sharks Chief Executive, Dean Bowtell, said the JLT Community Series match would be a wonderful way for the Gold Coast to see the two Queensland elite teams in action.

“We’re thrilled to be able to host a JLT Community Series Match between the two Queensland AFL clubs, the Gold Coast SUNS & Brisbane Lions, right here at Southport Sharks on Sunday 11th March”

“We’ve supported the SUNS since the bid for an AFL License back in 2008 and it’s great to be able to continue to grow the game in the region, by hosting what will be the only top level AFL fixture on the Coast until June next year.

“We look forward to working with our partner the Gold Coast SUNS over the coming months to deliver a great experience for all those members and fans that come out to Southport Sharks for the match.”
