Gold Coast SUNS captain Gary Ablett has been nominated for the 2016 Goal of the Year for a piece of individual brilliance against Essendon at Metricon Stadium on Saturday.

In his first appearance for 2016, Ablett gathered 34 disposals to go with nine clearances, seven tackles and seven inside 50s. But it was his magical second quarter goal that reminded the fans exactly what the little master is capable of.

After starting the chain, the skipper was on the end of a handball receive from Alex Sexton on the half forward flank.

With Brendon Goddard closing, the little master wrong footed the Essendon captain before unloading from beyond 50 and slotting the goal to send Metricon Stadium into a frenzy.
