Gold Coast SUNS champion Gary Ablett has been nominated for the AFL Goal of the Year following his outstanding piece of individual brilliance against Greater Western Sydney at Metricon Stadium on Saturday.

Halfway through the second quarter, Giants defender Nick Haynes played on from a kick in, taking one bounce and then another before trying to kick the ball outside of defensive 50.

As he put leather to foot, the little master read his movements like a book. He smothered the ball with outstretched arms, before following up his work, gathering the loose ball and dribbling the ball along the ground from an acute angle deep in the pocket.

For anyone else this would have been a moment to marvel. For Ablett, it was just another piece of play that we have become accustomed to during his phenomenal career. Class and determination personified in the blink of an eye.
