The Gold Coast SUNS first to fourth year players were greeted with a daunting second morning of the pre-season at Metricon Stadium on Tuesday.

Awaiting them when they arrived was a watt bike challenge assessment, which new high performance coach Justin Cordy prescribed to determine individual training zones and loads for each player’s pre-season cross training programs.

The gruelling fitness test lasted for 35 minutes and was comprised of six different intervals that required the players to work to their maximum output.

“The purpose of the test is basically to get the boys training power output zones across a duration of different periods, ranging from six seconds to four minutes,” new Gold Coast sports scientist Fergus O’Connor told SUNS TV on Tuesday.

“From those zones we can more accurately prescribe cross training and bike sessions throughout the pre-season.

“The whole test takes around 35 minutes, there’s six intervals where the boys are working to maximal effort between six seconds and four minutes.”
