Gold Coast local Max Spencer will make his AFL debut on Saturday night at Metricon Stadium when the SUNS take on Richmond.

The news of Spencer's debut comes as a result of captain Steven May not being able to prove his fitness at Gold Coast's late training session on Thursday night.

Spencer was upgraded to the senior list on Thursday afternoon in anticipation of such an event.

The 20-year-old will join fellow Gold Coast success story Jesse Joyce in the back-six, and follows in the footsteps of Jack Bowes and Brad Scheer, Academy graduates who have also made their senior debut for the SUNS this year.

Dan Currie has been added to the emergency list.
