Gold Coast ruckman Zac Smith could finding competing in the ruck against former rugby international Mike Pyke this Sunday, should the former Canada fullback be passed fit by Sydney’s medical team.

Smith – who code-hopped, himself, from soccer to AFL in his teens – has been in very solid form since his return from a long-term knee injury against St Kilda three weeks ago.

2012 premiership player Pyke is set to face a series of fitness tests ahead of this weekend’s round 12 battle against the GC SUNS, after missing three matches with a hamstring injury.

Swans’ physiotherapist, Matt Cameron, said Pyke is scheduled to train on Wednesday, and if successful would be in the mix for a senior call-up.

“He is close, and he’s due to train with the team tomorrow,” Cameron said.

“He’s been out for three-to-four weeks so we’d like him to be able to train tomorrow and Friday in order to be available.”

Promising utility Dane Rampe was subbed out of the Swans’ crushing 110-point win with a knee complaint, but is expected to resume training on Friday.

While he will face a race against the clock, Cameron said the second-year player would be given every opportunity to prove his fitness.

“He twisted his knee in the very first contest of the game and it just got sorer and sorer as the game went on and hence why we subbed him midway through the third quarter,” Cameron said.

“His knee has pulled up with some damage behind it but he’s getting better each day.

“We just need to see how he is by the end of the week.

“He’ll need to be able to try and train Friday and we’ll make a decision then, but the longer week does help him.”
