Gold Coast fans erupted, while even Geelong’s most passionate supporters stood to applaud as Gary Ablett slotted a spine tingling goal from the boundary line at forward pocket as the SUNS and Cats contested a thriller under lights at Simmonds Stadium in Round 10.

It’s an effort which has the GC SUNS skipper in the running for another accolade, The British Paints, Goal of the year award.

While Gold Coast SUNS captain Gary Ablett banked consecutive Goal of the year nominations during the regular season, it is was his boundary line brilliance against his former team mates that made the final cut alongside Hawthorn’s Lance Franklin (Round 3) and Carlton’s Andrew Walker (Round 7).

It was a match in which the Gold Coasters more than troubled the home side for much of the encounter, and at one stage it looked as though the Ablett led SUNS were on track to derail plans to celebrate the first ever match at the venue to be contested under lights.

While Geelong eventually ran out comfortable winners, it was the effort of the Gold Coasters and that miracle goal from Ablett that had the AFL fraternity in a spin.

At the same AFL venue a young Gary had watched his legendary father establish himself as one of the game’s greatest forwards, Gary Jnr provided one of the AFL highlights of the season.

During each of his 34 touches Ablett produced something special, but none better than his shot from the boundary line in the final change.

Gold Coast fans can vote for Gary’s Goal of the Year nomination at www.afl.com.au/goal

By correctly choosing the goal of the year, fans will enter the major prize draw to win $5000.

Voting will close at 7pm on Monday 16 September.

The Lifebroker Mark of the Year and British Paints Goal of the Year will be announced prior to the 2013 Toyota AFL Grand Final.
