The Gold Coast SUNS look set to open their season with a bang, with newspaper reports suggesting the GC SUNS will play Richmond, for the first time ever on the Gold Coast.

The Courier Mail is reporting the GC SUNS will open their 2014 home and away campaign against Tigers on March 15.

The proposed season opener would be a huge result for AFL fans in Queensland.

Richmond, who boast a massive supporter base across the country, will play at Metricon Stadium for the first time and have already struck up a big rivalry with the GC SUNS.

The GC SUNS have caused upsets in Cairns over the last three seasons, rolling the Tigers twice in memorable encounters, including Karmichael Hunt’s historic goal after the siren in 2012.

It has also been mooted that the AFL is set to launch a revised pre-season tournament that will feature 18 matches in 18 days.

The 2014 AFL Fixture will be released on Thursday.
