Brandon Matera has put pen to paper, finalising a contract that will see him remain with the Gold Coast SUNS until the end of 2017.

The son of former Fitzroy and West Coast player Wally Matera and nephew of former Eagles Peter and Phil Matera, Brandon has played 47 matches and booted 51 goals with the GC SUNS.

Matera said he was rapt to be extending his career on the Gold Coast.

“I’m really pumped to be re-signing with the Gold Coast SUNS. We are now playing consistent and competitive football, and while we still have a long way to go, all of us young guys who came to the club in the early days believed we would be in the position we are now, the challenge now is to work just as hard to continue the job we started,” Matera said.

The 22-year-old said he wants to continue his consistent form after three injury-interrupted seasons.

“I’m really confident that I know my body well now, that probably hampered me in the first two seasons, while last year’s injury against the Cats where I tore ligaments in my ankle was just something that happens in a game in footy.

“This year I have felt that I’ve been able to take my game to another level and I plan to build on that going forward.”

Joining the GC SUNS as one of twelve 17-year-olds made available to the club under the AFL's draft concessions, Matera has kicked 18 goals from eight matches in 2014.

GC SUNS List & Strategy Manager, Scott Clayton, credited Matera’s manager Colin Young, as well as Brandon's parents Wally and Carolyn, in securing a multi-year contract extension.

“We are pleased to confirm Brandon will remain with the Gold Coast SUNS for a further three years,” Clayton said.

“Brandon is an extremely important player for us and is someone who has developed enormously, both on and off the field in recent years.

“His re-signing shows he has faith in the direction of our football club and wants to be a part of its future success.”
