The battle between Sam Day and Peter Wright to claim Gold Coast’s second key forward position behind star Tom Lynch is closer than ever after Sunday’s NAB Challenge opener against Brisbane.

Day registered six disposals, two marks, five tackles and kicked 0.1 while Wright fared slightly better with 11 touches, four marks and a goal.

Neither took the game by storm but will go head-to-head against in the SUNS’ second NAB Challenge game against West Coast next Thursday.

“It’s an interesting one, I’d probably have to look at the tape again,” coach Rodney Eade told reporters in his post-match press conference.

“I thought Pete (Wright) looked more dangerous. He’s still got a lot to learn, a few elements of his game he needs to work on.

“Sam (Day) didn’t have a big influence I didn’t think, but I thought Sam competed okay and tried well, it just didn’t work for him today.

“Just a couple of shots we needed to take. That one he kicked that one into the man on the mark and that sort of thing, he’s gotta nail those but I think the thing is they’ll both play next game and we’ll just make an assessment from there.”

While both key talls are currently fighting for the one positon in the team, Eade revealed he wasn’t against playing both talls alongside Lynch if the situation suited.

“Probably initially (battling for the one spot), yes,” he said.

“We could play both, I’m not against playing both because Pete’s got a really big tank. Pete can really run up and down the ground.

“So it’s not against the grain that we won’t play both but probably you would think in an ideal world they’re probably fighting for one spot.”
