For the second consecutive season, prodigious talent Jack Martin endured an injury-marred campaign, although in the closing stages of the year, the West Australian demonstrated his class and football nous to build momentum into 2016.

The lightly built 20-year-old played the opening five games before suffering an ankle injury against Brisbane in QClash9. He then sustained a hamstring injury in the opening minute of Gold Coast’s round nine loss to premiers Hawthorn in Tasmania. Hardly the ideal start to the year for the highly talented midfielder.

Martin’s performance against Geelong in round three at Simonds Stadium was one of the finest of his year, with the emerging star collecting a career-high 21 possessions, seven marks and kicking 3.2. For such a wiry frame, Martin continued to amaze with his strong overhead marking against quality opposition.

However, after suffering the hamstring tear against the Hawks, it took Martin until round 18 to return at senior level. By that time, the season was over in terms of finals aspirations, but the opportunity to build some continuity in his football presented itself. A crucial opportunity given his injury besieged past, and something that Martin grasped in the closing stages of the season.

His return against West Coast in round 18 showed glimpses of the mastery we have quickly become accustomed to seeing from Martin. His deft distribution by hand, ferocious tackling and smart decision-making played a part in the SUNS producing a stunning draw against the second placed Eagles.

The pick of Martin’s season came against Essendon at Metricon Stadium in round 21, with the excitement machine doing damage close to goal. He booted 3.3 from 16 possessions to be a key contributor, although his inaccuracy in front of goal that night was a concern. However, he wasn’t alone.

The Broome product finished the year in a strong fashion in the closing fortnight against Port Adelaide and Sydney, finding some continuity finally, after a frustrating start to the year. It is not hard to be seduced by Martin given his brilliance. Here’s hoping he can remain on the park for an extended period so he can put sides to the sword with his array of weapons.
