Debutant Josh Glenn has grabbed a special slice of Gold Coast SUNS history amid Charlie Dixon’s brutal assault on the club record books on Saturday evening.

Glenn had 21 possessions in the SUNS 64-point QClash 9 win over the Brisbane Lions at Metricon Stadium to rank highest among 56 players to make their AFL debut for the club.

This bettered the previous best of 20 possessions by Michael Coad on debut back in the club’s second game against the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium in 2011.

It came after midfielder Glenn, a 21-year-old from Central Districts elevated last week from the rookie list, kicked a goal with his first touch in AFL football just 85 seconds into his career.

Glenn and Henry Schade, who had eight possessions and 10 1%ers in his long-awaited AFL debut, became the 73rd and 74th players overall to play for the SUNS. And the club’s 9th and 10th AFL debutants to open their career with a win.

But the history books will show it was Dixon’s night.

His six goals in just his second game of the year equaled the record he’d shared previously with Harley Bennell, and equaled the QClash record set by Brisbane’s Ash McGrath in QClash 1 in 2011.

Also, Dixon’s 15 contested possessions, which went a long way to setting the team tone for the night, equaled the club record for a big man set by Tom Lynch in Round 20 last year against Carlton.

On a night SUNS fans will not forget in a hurry, Gold Coast improved their overall QClash record to 3-6 in posting the third-highest QClash score all-time, the highest score all-time at Metricon in the SUNS era, and the second-biggest QClash victory ever - one point behind Brisbane’s Round 4 win at the Gabba in 2012.

It was the SUNS’ second-biggest win, behind only the 83-point triumph against the GWS Giants at Metricon in Round 23, 2013, and the club’s 25th win overall.

In other statistical highlights:

Michael Rischitelli, who has won lavish praise from coach Rodney Eade since taking over the captaincy from the injured Gary Ablett, posted his first win as SUNS captain. And Eade had his first win as SUNS coach. Jarrod Harbrow remains the only player to have played in each of the club’s wins.

Adam Saad had nine bounces – second only in a single game in SUNS history behind Nathan Bock’s 12 in Round 22 2011 against Geelong. In five games Saad, taken at No.24 in last year’s rookie draft, has had 22 bounces to jump to 13th all-time on a club list headed by Jarrod Harbrow with 136 bounces in 81 games. Saad averages 4.4 bounces per game – Harbrow averages 1.7.

Saad’s 26 possessions was a personal best and gives him 87 possessions in five games. This is second on the AFL possession list for players drafted for the first time last year, behind only Melbourne’s Aaron Vandenberg, who has 88 possessions in five games. Touk Miller’s 21 possessions in the QClash was one short of his personal best, set a week earlier against GWS, and sees him third on the same list with 78 possessions in five games.  Others prominent on this list are St Kilda’s Jack Lonie (67 in 5) and Jack Sinclair (59 in 5), Melbourne’s Angus Brayshaw (57 in 5), Sydney’s Isaac Heeney (47 in 4), West Coast’s Liam Duggan (45 in 5) and Western Bulldogs’ Lucas Webb (43 in 3). Gold Coast’s Jarrod Garlett, with 37 possessions in five games after an injury-forced ‘duck’ on Saturday night, is next best.

Saad, Miller, Garlett, Glenn and Schade experienced their first AFL win on Saturday night, while Bennell, Dixon, Jesse Lonergan, Jack Martin, Alex Sexton and Seb Tape had their first QClash win.

The 64-point win completed a character-filled 110-point turnaround from the 66-point loss to the Giants in Round 4. This was the fourth biggest turnaround in club history. Topping this list is the 147-point turnaround from Rounds 6-7 in 2011, when they lost by 139 points to Essendon at Etihad Stadium in Round 6 before beating Brisbane in the first QClash at the Gabba in Round 7.

The SUNS’ team possession count of 394 was the club’s fourth highest all-time.

The SUNS’ team tackle count of 92, which improved massively on their equivalent efforts of 53-53-54-65 in the first four rounds, was equal third best in club history. Trent McKenzie led the tackle count with a personal-best 10 tackles.

Henry Schade’s 70-game wait for his AFL debut set a record that will take some breaking. It bettered the previous highest of 41 games set by foundation signing Piers Flanagan, who debuted in Round 21 2012.

Brisbane’s score of 7-12 (54) was equal third lowest against the SUNS, and second lowest against the SUNS at Metricon.
