Gold Coast SUNS teenage ace Jack Martin is back in full training and edging closer to making his return to football.

In a massive boost for Gold Coast fans and members, Martin was cleared by medical staff on Sunday to commence contact training for the first time since his luckless round one debut against Richmond, where he damaged his left AC joint in the opening term.

Following consultation with shoulder specialists, Martin underwent surgery and has been sidelined for the past three months

But GC SUNS high performance manager, Stephen Schwerdt, told goldcoastfc.com.au the West Australian young gun has made significant progress in his rehab.

“It’s been really positive for Jack, he’s had a good recovery period on his shoulder and has trained with the team for the last three-four weeks now,” Schwerdt said.

“He’ll start to ramp up his competitive workload and hopefully in a week or two we’ll start to see Jack back in action.”

Meantime, Karmichael Hunt will be tested at the club’s main training session later this week after playing through a minor knee complaint in his senior return against Sydney on Sunday.

“He had a sore knee from the week before when he played in the NEAFL, and came up pretty good but he did aggravate it a little bit during the game,” Schwerdt said.

“We’ll assess him later in the week and make a call then.”

In other injury news, Daniel Gorringe could be back in the No. 15 guernsey sooner rather than later.

The athletic ruckman has been chipping away at his rehab program, following mid-season surgery on a troublesome Achilles.

“He’s made good progress; we’ve been pleased with how quickly he has progress and hopefully he’s going to join the team in training next week.

“It’ll be good to get another big man back on the deck.”
