Football’s worst kept secret has finally been revealed, with Jack Martin to make his AFL debut for the Gold Coast against Richmond this Saturday night.

The teenage superstar was this morning confirmed a walk-up starter for Saturday’s blockbuster opener, cementing his spot in the side through consistent performances in the pre-season showdowns against Essendon, Brisbane and Collingwood.

Martin said he can’t wait to finally taste AFL premiership football after spending last season in the NEAFL.

“Obviously it’s been a long time coming. I’m just excited for the opportunity and honoured to put on the colours for the first time,” Martin said.

Too young to play senior AFL football last season, the Western Australian used the opportunity to gain a twelve-month head start on what would have been his 2013 draft classmates.

He added 7kg of much-needed muscle to his wiry 185cm build, and gained valuable football experience playing alongside the likes of Michael Rischitelli, Dion Prestia, Karmichael Hunt and Nathan Bock.

“I feel more comfortable out there (on the playing field) and I guess I know what to expect this year so I’m excited for the year ahead.”
Although he is yet to play an AFL match, increased expectations are already following Martin.

At the AFL’s annual season launch in Adelaide last week, Martin was the club captains’ hot tip to win the 2014 NAB AFL Rising Star.

But the humble boy from Broome is doing his best to steer clear of the hype surrounding his round one debut.

“Without putting too much pressure on myself I just want to get out there and play my role for the team,” he said.

“I just want to help the team get the four points and do whatever I can.”

He knows it will be no easy ask though, with the Tigers shaping up as a finals contender again this season.

“Obviously they played in the top eight last year so it will be a good opportunity for us to see where we are at in the competition.

“I know everyone is looking forward to the opportunity so it should be a tough game.”
