The Gold Coast SUNS have claimed victory in their VFL Elimination Final against the Box Hill Hawks at Metricon Stadium on Sunday evening.

In front of a strong crowd, the SUNS won through to the Semi Final against the Sydney Swans with a 23-point win.

Box Hill showed they had come to play in the first starting the game strongly and took a six-point lead into the first break, kicking four goals, four behinds from their eight scoring shots.

Alex Sexton started the game strongly for the SUNS and could have had three goals to his name by quarter time, but he could only convert from one of his set shot opportunities.

It was another SUNS forward who led from the front in the second quarter.

SUNS Academy member Jed Foggo showed his wares with an impressive display, kicking two goals of his own and setting one up for Frosty Miller Medallist Chris Burgess.

Four goals to one for the quarter saw the SUNS take a 13-point lead into the main break.

Box Hill came out in the second half and showed that they weren’t just going to allow the SUNS to cruise into the second week of finals.

A spirited third quarter fightback will leave the Hawks rueing missed opportunities failing to convert on a number of occasions in front of goal. 14 points the difference going into the last.

But it was Josh Corbett who put the SUNS on the front foot in the fourth, collecting cleanly from a forward fifty contest and snapping truly, before two in a row for Box Hill made for a tense finish.

Enter the competitions leading goal kicker, Chris “Frosty Miller” Burgess, who steadied the ship with not one, but two crucial final term goals.

Sam Flanders was instrumental in the midfield finishing with a game high 35 disposals, Corbett kicked four goals and had 17 marks in the forward line and Charlie Constable found plenty of it coming out of the back half.
