With 17 listed players in the squad, the Gold Coast SUNS NEAFL team have easily accounted for Aspley to the tune of 106 points in a practice match at Metricon Stadium on Saturday.

The game looked over at quarter-time, with Gold Coast enjoying 15 scoring shots to one to open up a 44-point lead, eventually going on to a 20.16 (136) to 4.6 (30) victory over the Hornets.

The SUNS looked switched on from the outset, with Jarrad Grant finding Tom Nicholls in the opening minute for the big ruckman to slot home the first goal of the game. Moving the ball with precision, the SUNS piled on six consecutive goals going into quarter time but should have led by far more, with a run of eight consecutive behinds the only tarnish on an impressive quarter.

The home side kept the foot down in the second term with five goals to one, with Aspley taking until the six-minute mark to boot their solitary goal of the half. Rookie Cam Loersch’s two second-quarter majors and scoreboard impact from the team’s U19 Academy players helped the SUNS to a 67-point lead at the main break.

In temperatures nudging 30 degrees, the intensity of the game slowed after half time, with Gold Coast easing their way to a comprehensive win.

The SUNS had an even spread of contributors, with Brandon Matera putting his hand up for a round one berth, booting five goals including a brilliant effort from the boundary line late in the final quarter.

Loersch finished with four, his upside highlighted with a strong contested mark at the top of the goal square deep into time on.
