The Gold Coast SUNS have kicked off their 2013 Australia Post Community Camp in Townsville with a flurry of activity, after flying out early Wednesday afternoon ahead of their Round 2 NAB Cup match against North Melbourne at Tony Ireland Stadium this Saturday.

GC SUNS senior coach Guy McKenna and the 22-man squad were guests of Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill at a civic reception in Flinders Square on Thursday morning before departing for several community visits.

The players managed to visit a total of 17 primary and secondary schools in the northern region throughout the morning, as well as a short stop at the community’s youth detention centre.

The team were then back on the road later that afternoon, visiting and holding AFL skills clinics at local junior AFL clubs before travelling for a community dinner at Tony Ireland Stadium.

The GC SUNS will continue their Community Camp in Townsville today, with further school and hospital visits scheduled for the playing group.

The GC SUNS coaching staff will also hold a coaching clinic for local parents and volunteers after the SUNS open training session at Tony Ireland Stadium this afternoon, where the team’s North Queensland supporters can watch their favourite GC SUNS players in action ahead of Saturday’s NAB Cup match.

Townsville Mayor – Jenny Hill, recently told AFL Queensland that the AFL pre-season exhibition, which will be the first NAB Cup match played in Townsville, would mark a significant milestone in the city’s sporting history.

“It’s going to be a great game with a fantastic supporting festival and I would encourage people to get their tickets now to avoid disappointment,” Jenny said.

“This is our chance to show off the city’s support for the code and help to secure future matches in Townsville.”
