The Gold Coast SUNS are pleased to welcome young defender Ellie Veerhuis to its AFLW list for the upcoming season.
Veerhuis joins the club as an injury replacement player for Daisy D’Arcy, who will be sidelined for 2025 as she continues to recover from an ACL injury suffered late last year.
The 19-year-old is a product of the Sydney Swans Academy and is a highly-touted prospect after impressing as a rebounding defender before also earning opportunities in the midfield for the Allies at last year’s Under 18 National Championships.
Known for her speed, defensive pressure and run-and-carry from defence, Head of Women’s Football Fiona Sessarago is excited about to see what Veerhuis can add to the SUNS squad.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Ellie to the SUNS,” Sessarago said.
“We have been following Ellie’s journey and her development, in particular throughout her top-age year in 2024, was impressive. It’s fantastic that she’s now earned her opportunity to move on to an AFLW list.
“Her versatility and experience playing in several positions across defence and midfield will be a fantastic addition to our squad, and at just 19 years old, she’s still got plenty of growth ahead of her.
“We’re looking forward to having her join us and continue her development.”
Veerhuis’ addition completes the SUNS’ 30-player AFLW list for the 2025 season. She will join her new teammates next week as the club continues its pre-season preparations ahead of the season opener against the West Coast Eagles on Thursday, August 14.
