The SUNS have risen to the occasion, defeating Port Melbourne at ETU Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
In its push to play in the Smithy’s VFL Finals Series, the Gold Coast led for the entirety of the contest, sealing a 13-point win over the Borough.
Gold Coast fired up the scoreboard with four unanswered majors including one apiece from returning SUN Caleb Lewis (four goals), Malcolm Rosas Jnr (one goal) and two goals from Alex Sexton, keeping the Borough at bay until the 17th minute of the second term.
A burst of three late goals in the third quarter saw the SUNS surge to a game-high 34-point advantage at the final change.
With finals on the line, Port Melbourne found another gear as multiple goal kickers desperately attempted to close the margin, but the SUNS held firm to claim the win and overtake the Borough on the VFL ladder.
Influential ruckman Ned Moyle (one goal, 44 hit-outs and 23 disposals) and key midfielder Alex Davies (27 disposals & 10 tackles) continued their streak of stand out performances.
